Ponta Delgada International Airport Transfers

When you arrive at Ponta Delgada Airport in the Azores you have three main options of transfer to Ponta Delgada city, which is located only a few km from the airport. Ponta Delgada Airport is a single terminal airport located on the Azorean Island of São Miguel, and two options of transferring from one island to another within the archipelago.

Please make sure to collect your luggage from the baggage claim area before exiting the arrivals hall and heading to your choice of transfer.

If you are departing from the airport please make sure you have collected all your belongings from the transfer of your choice.

Car Rentals

There are several rental car companies at Ponta Delgada Airport offering the freedom of travelling across the island as suits your wants and needs. They can be found in the public area of the terminal, before security for departing travelers and once through to landside after arriving.

When returning a rented vehicle to the rental car company please follow the instructions given by your company.

Shuttles

ANC Aerobus offers shuttle services to and from Ponta Delgada airport and the city between 07.00-00.00 every day of the week and there is no need to pre-book the journey. One way tickets are only a few euros for an adult traveler and are purchased from the driver. 

The route departs to and from the airport every 40 minutes and stops at 21 different locations in the city area meaning it stops nearby most hotels in the city.

The bus stop at the airport is located just outside the terminal.

Taxis

The official taxi rank is located right outside the airport’s arrivals exit and there is no need to order one in advance. The journey takes around 10-15 minutes and the cost is around 15 €.

Transferring between the Azores Islands

There are two ways of travelling between the islands, by plane or by ferry. There is only one airline and one ferry company offering inter-island connections so it is easy to choose. Which option is best for you will depend on the islands you are travelling from and to and which time of the year it is, and of course how much time and money you want to spend on it.

Flights are more expensive, but take less time to an island not located right next to the island you are travelling from, while ferries cost far less, but take longer. Not all islands are inter-connected with each other, but there are at least flight connections between the three island groups all year around. 

It is recommended to plan for flexibility in the itinerary when it comes to inter-island transfers as both flights and ferry departures tend to be delayed, cancelled or changed, partly due to weather, but it may be for any reason. Schedules change often and it is difficult to plan exact travels long in advance.

Don't forget - if you plan to travel during your stay, it might be more economical to rent a car at Ponta Delgada Airport.
